The Chimurenga Electroacoustic Ensemble take the concept of large ensembles synonymous with jazz, gamelan and numerous other world genres and apply it within an electroacoustic setting. Akumu - Descent [PAN 056]
Descent is the continuation of Akumu’s study of resonances and micro-sonics found in our everyday world. Based on field recordings captured within train stations, banks and other large buildings, these four pieces re-synthesize and reduce those grand structures into the infinitesimal — the real into the abstract. The result is an imaginary “molecular soundtrack” for the residents and travelers of these spaces. Simultaneously part of, and yet isolated from their surroundings and other passersby, this might very well be the raw sound equivalent of their interconnections to each other and the world around them.

Mille Bayous is the latest offering from the collaborative team of Horvey, Goldschneider and Morton. Their work references free jazz traditions and mistakes, contemporary/experimental composition, and other modes of improvised and found music to create an actuelle-folk-electroacoustic sound. It is cute, patient, noisy, brash, cheeky, epic, and proficient. Mille Bayous is their first release, although some of their work has also appeared on two solo albums by Amy Horvey, as well as in numerous live performances in Montreal, Stratford, across Saskatchewan, and other locations in Canada.

Knowing there is a psychic link between all of us (third eye shit). At the very least it is emotional intuition of the kind that will see an audience clap along to the pulsating rhythm of clashing line-hum frequencies while the history of Top 40 bullshit is slaughtered through radio mistunings and the guitarist lays down a style equal parts country and metal. Punk without a fashion sense. Death without romance. A healthy respect for human power, humour and soul.
